How To Make A Balloon Animal Spider – Step By Step Twisting Tutorial

As Fall approaches, we as Charlotte, NC balloon artists start thinking about the next seasonal twisting designs.  With Halloween and Fall festivals on the horizon, the spider definitely makes the list. Here is a design that Catherine created that is cute, simple, and fun to make!

This balloon design may not be quite fast enough to use in line work where you have only a couple of minutes per balloon but it may be the perfect choice if the line is short or if you are twisting for a child’s birthday party! Make one and see what you think.

We have included both a video tutorial and written step-by-step instructions below on how to make this design. Enjoy!

Here is what you will need:

1 Black 260 Q

2 Red 160 Q’s (or whatever color you choose)

1 Qualatex spider eyes top print 5″ round

So here is the step-by-step tutorial of how to twist this balloon:
STEP 1

Blow up your black 260 balloon and leave about 6 fingers of tail. This will be for your spider body.

STEP 2

Start by making two pinch twists.

STEP 3

Make a bubble about the length of your hand.

STEP 4

Twist this bubble back into your original two pinch twists.

STEP 5

Make another bubble the same length as your last two and roll it through the middle of your two long bubbles.

STEP 6

Make one more bubble the same size as the last three and roll it through again just like you did the last bubble. You should now have a “bird body” shape. Break off the remaining 260 and tie or wrap it in.

STEP 7

Inflate your two 160 balloons all the way and burp them generously to make sure they are nice and soft then tie them off. We will use these to make the spider legs.

STEP 8

Find the mid-point of each 160 balloon and create a twist at that point

STEP 9

Line up your two 160 balloons with the twisted points at opposite ends and twist both balloons together at the center point to create eight legs.

STEP 10

Slide the legs through the space in the center of the spider body until they are even on both sides and arrange the legs so that the connected legs are in the center.

STEP 11

Do some shaping twists where the knee joints should be by bending the balloon and messaging the joint to create that spidery look. I like to have the front two legs pointing forward.

STEP 12

Inflate your spider eye 5″ round, wrap it into the pinch twists, and presto! You have a fantastic balloon animal spider!
