3 Ways To Use Balloons Tastefully At A Wedding

One of the common comments I hear when doing decor for large special occasions is “I had no idea you could use balloons for something like this. It looks amazing!” In America, balloons are associated with a party vibe. Common venues associated with balloons are birthday parties, festivals, grand openings, clowning events, special deals or sales, or any other fun, care free, party event. The thought of using balloons to create a touch of elegance and sophistication to a special occasion is usually far from peoples minds when choosing what decor they plan to use for that special day.

As a Charlotte balloon artist, one of the things I love to do is to take a special occasion like a wedding and use balloons to make it unique, elegant, and beautiful. My goal is for people to walk through the door and say “Wow! that is amazing!”

Wedding Balloon Decor Art

Having balloons at your wedding is definitely unique. I mean think about it. How many of your friends or relatives had balloons as a staple decoration at their wedding? It’s a concept that, for the most part, is off the radar for most people. That’s one thing that makes it fun! It’s unexpected and it works!

Another great thing about using balloon art at your wedding is that balloons can be used to create just about any look or feel you want. There are many options and styles. If you’ve ever looked at wedding balloon decorations on Pintrest you know what I mean.

Here are just three wedding balloon ideas from a wedding we did recently at Heritage USA located in Fort Mill, SC:

1. Balloon Garland or Organic Arch

This is not something you find at Party City. Balloon garlands and organic arches are custom made and come in a diverse array of styles, sizes, shapes, and color combinations. They are unique in that they are not limited to an arch or column shape but can be directed in any direction and can flow wherever you choose to take them. These are amazing for any event, and when the correct colors are used, can be a great addition to your wedding atmosphere.

This organic arch was made for a wedding we did recently. The bride wanted some form of archway to dress up the awning and front entrance of the venue but didn’t like the traditional symmetrical shape of standard balloon arches. This organic arch flowed into a unique shape to add the touch that this door needed. We made a one-of-a-kind frame for this arch out of wire that covered the awning and light fixtures on either side of the door and then filled it in to create the effect you see here.  It was the first impression the guests received when they arrived at the venue and also made it clear where the wedding entrance was.

2. Balloon Columns

The bride wanted lots of large balloons incorporated into her reception area. Our decor choices were designed to incorporate the look she was going for.

There are many directions you can take if you decide to use columns for a wedding depending on the feel wanted. This venue was large with three story high ceilings and a fair amount of floor space so we used linking columns because they fit with the “large balloon” theme and were easy to adjust height-wise, thus helping to fill the empty ceiling space.

These linking columns were used at two different heights to accent various locations around the reception area. We used pearl colors to give them that sophisticated sheen. Here one of our artists setting up before the event:

You may notice that these columns do not appear to be completely straight in the pictures. This style column gently sways back and forth with any air currents flowing through the room which often creates a gentle waving effect. These small movements can add to the beauty of the event. It reminds me of trees swaying in a gentle breeze.

3. Large Helium or Air-Filled Balloons

With very high ceilings like this venue, or at any outdoor event, large balloons can be used to fill the empty space above to create a beautiful effect. We added large 30″ to 36″ balloons over the buffet tables spread around the room at various heights in order to achieve this look.

Floating Bubbles Wedding Balloons

One of my favorite ways to add a touch of elegance to balloon decorations is to add lights. We added just a few lights as accents to the linking column segments to give them a soft glow and to the bases of the large balloons to add just a touch of sparkle. There are almost endless ways to add lights to balloon art, and when done tastefully, it adds a wow factor. Think about Disney. Doesn’t beautiful magic always come with beautiful lights?  I intend to write an article in the future dedicated to this subject.

My daughter loves balloon animals, and I think that being able to get some information would be good. I’m glad you talked about large balloons, which I think would be good for her. I’m going to have to look for some good options and figure out what I can find! Thanks!
